When it comes to the sport of Field Hockey in Arizona, there is only one name that stands out – the Phoenix Scorpions Field Hockey Club. Our club was started in late 1998 by a small group of hockey enthusiast who had moved to the valley of the sun from different parts of the US, Canada and the world. At that time, filed hockey was a relatively unknown sport in this part of the country. Gradually the group organized, created awareness and recruited players from all ages and today the Scorpions have over two hundred members and host the largest annual field hockey tournament in Arizona.
The Cactus Classic Field Hockey Tournament, which is organized by the club and held each spring in Phoenix, attracts teams from across the US and Canada. In the past we've had over 40 teams participate in the tournament consisting of men’s, women’s, mixed, Under 16 and Under 13 divisions. Relying on perfect playing weather and a world-class playing facility, the Scorpions have managed to deliver an outstanding event experience each and every year. The 2022 Cactus Classic tournament will be no exception.
Part of the Scorpions main objectives has always been a strong emphasis on junior development. The club has made each junior player their priority by ensuring that boys and girls are given the right tools, coaching and training needed to improve their skills while having fun. On numerous occasions, the club has invited prominent hockey coaches from the US and India in order to provide training to the newer players, while providing high caliber instruction to the upcoming star players. A few of the Scorpion’s junior players have gone on to qualify for the National Junior Field Hockey team.
In order to meets its objectives, the Scorpions provide a year-round junior development program for boys and girls of all ages. The program consists of two practice days per week. During each practice session, our coach focuses on specific drills and training routines designed to enhance and complement the skill level of each player. This way kids are learning new skills while strengthening existing skills. Although the focus is on training, the emphasis is always on having fun. Each practice session ends with a friendly game of hockey. However, safety is never compromised. All players are required to wear mouth and shin guards and encouraged to play competitively, yet safely.
Another aspect of the Scorpions kids program is participation local and regional hockey tournaments. This is best way kids are able to put their skills to test, while playing as a team and meeting and making new hockey friends. Our recent visits have been to California and Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada. Recently a few of our young players have made the US National team at the different age groups!
In late 2021, our club started the process of constructing our own field hockey pitch. Through hard work, dedication and limitless generosity of our members, we completed the construction of our second water-based hockey pitch in January 2022. We are also proud to boast that our club members were actively involved in the construction of the field helping wherever they could, taking the concept of teamwork to a different level.
